QMJHL Early Season Visualizations

For those of you missing hockey in October, there is top tier junior hockey being played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Their website (and the CHL website and app) provide video highlights and game summaries and there is an option to purchase a monthly subscription to watch the games live.

I’ve visualized team performance, top scorers, and top goaltenders in three charts above. The team performance plots percentage of possible points earned by the team (points in relation to games played), goal differential on the season (divided by games played), PDO (PP% + PK%), and Penalty Minutes (PIM). Some dominant teams are at the top, as Acadie-Bathurst and Victoria have played very well, as have Blainville-Boisbriand (although in fewer games due to COVID). The second chart plots the top scorers in the league, observing Shots on Goal and Points (X and Y Axes), Goals (size), and +/- on season (color). The top goaltenders are shown in the third visualization with Goals Against Average (GAA) plotted against Save Percentage (Sav%), and Wins shown by size.

If you’re missing hockey, this is a great option to check out in the short-run, but once you do, you may be hooked for the year.
